Programs provide money for food, shelter, health care and the myriad psychological effects of children being raised by children. Discipline and guidance for the fatherless is meted out by police and courts. The government, however, has proven a poor surrogate for a father.
To be sure, there are voices emerging that connect the diminishing role of the father with poverty, crime and overall social disintegration. There may be no better time to understand what role fathers play in the lives of their children and in society as a whole.

What a soulful read! I found it perfect for me from both the perspective of currently raising a teen and seeing how some of the life themes discussed can usefully play out in the other areas of my life. The use of letters to convey those themes was a truly revolutionary approach that made reading it seem less like a lecture to me and more like I was a friend that was just listening in on the author's conversation. My favorite takeaway: "Find the love in others and the joy in each moment and you shall always be free." Five stars!Product details

"Write Father, Write Son" is a beautifully written, inspirational book that takes the reader beyond the typical parent-child relationship.The depth of love and trust that Joe and Jared share is clear in their letters to one another and shows us the importance of the family system that is profoundly unique today. This is a great read for everyone!
Father and son Joseph and Jared Cohen created a poignant book through years of open-hearted letters and stories. Joseph's father was old-school, authoritarian, from the old country. He was an honorable man and a good provider. He did not express his feelings to his son.
Joseph vowed he would be different with his own child. He wrote him letters, starting when he was a boy. In them, he expresses his love, he admonishes, he encourages. But Jared begins to go off the rails. No spoilers, here! Buy this book! Buy it for your father for Father's Day. It's beautiful. Jared, too, is an excellent writer, and his short stories are imaginative and compelling.
Full disclosure I met Joseph Cohen on a commuter train when he put my heavy suitcase in the overhead rack, like the good father and gentleman he is. At the time, I was a newspaper editor, and this book was a gleam in his eye. How delightful to see it come to birth!
